Personal Training; Its an Investment in Health and Wellness!
Anyone can get a Personal Training Certification on the internet for around $50. If that seems like a crime you should see some of the trainers i see on a daily basis that have some of the more recognizable certifications such as NSCA, CSCS, ISSA, ACE etc... that don't have a clue. It really doesn't matter if your Trainer has a Certification or not, but what really matters is how effective the can deliver the workout to you, proper spotting techniques and a better than average knowledge of skeletal muscle and joint movement.
Most of today's trainers dont even have an Exercise Science degree. Without the knowledge you acquire from schooling, trainers cannot be as effective as they would be had they went to school. Studying the various energy systems, Anatomy and Physiology, Kinesiology (The study of joint movement), biomechanics, the effects of nutrition on exercise etc...etc...gives your trainer the knowledge they need to properly instruct you in all facets of Health, Fitness and Exercise.
As important as schooling is, its the intangibles that really count....does your trainer effectively describe new exercises? Does your trainer know proper form for each execise? Does your trainer communicate your mistakes in a constructive manner? Are they Punctual? Do they talk on their cell phone when they train you? Are you doing the same thing over and over? These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself. Are you being taught the importance of proper nutrition?... and however good or bad it is, are they telling you how if will effect your exercise? If they are not covering all the bases so to speak, then the chances are, they really dont know.
Bottom line is you should always question your trainers words and actions especially if you just hired them. If you have been training with them for a while, them maybe they are treating you right giving you all the attention you need. Remember a good trainer is an INVESTMENT! Dont look at working out as an expense, look at it as a long term investment on your health and vitality. If you are getting it cheap make sure you are not getting cheap training. If you are paying more than you think you should, but your trainer is a very good trainer and you continue to get good results then thats what its all about. Its an investment and its well worth the money to have better health which will lead to a longer more productive life.
